A Brief History of Slot Machines

The Liberty Bell, the first true slot machine, was built in 1985 by Charles Fey in San Francisco. It featured three reels and five symbols, laying the foundation for the mechanical slots that filled bars and casino floors in the early 20th century. In 1963, Bally introduced the Money Honey, an electromechanical slot machine with more advanced gameplay and larger jackpots.

Not long after, in the 1970s, video slots were introduced, bringing to the world of gaming an entirely new universe of immersive gaming, including video, animation, and cinematic sounds. This was followed by the first online casino that launched in 1994, and evolved into mobile gaming. Today, every one of us has access to thousands of slots at the tip of their fingers on their mobile device.

From Physical Cabinets to the Online Space

Nowadays, many slot machines that are popular hits on casino floors in Las Vegas and beyond are making their way to the online space, debuting in online casinos and mobile apps across North America.

Ziv Chen (Z.C.), a contributor to casino.com and a game expert with over two decades of experience working in the slots industry, went to Las Vegas to test for us some of the land-based games that are now available to online players across the US, Canada, and Europe.

Introducing Omnichannel Slots

Z.C.: Some of the land-based casino giant game developers, like Aristocrat, Bally’s, Light & Wonder, and IGT, have been working hard in recent years to attract a new generation of players and protect their traditional market share. So, all these companies that have traditionally developed games for physical cabinets in land-based casinos have established subsidiaries with the mission of bringing their games to the online space.

Most software developers refer to this movement as Omnichannel, allowing a slot’s seamless delivery, gameplay, and overall experience across various game channels. What this practically means is that I can go to play a slot at a casino in Las Vegas, then go back home, create an account at an online casino and play the same slot, and download the app and play it on my phone, too, all providing the same gameplay and experience.

Is It Really The Same Experience?

Z.C.: So, it sounds pretty cool on paper, but is there really no difference between playing on the casino floor and online? And if there is a difference, what is it? I tested the same slots online and in the casino, and here’s what I found out.

Oh, I Wanna Spin with Somebody - The Whitney Houston Slot

Whitney Houston Slot - Ziv Chen for Casino.ComWhitney Houston Slot - Ziv Chen for Casino.Com

Z.C.: Let’s start with the late pop and soul goddess Whitney Houston, not only because of my love of her iconic music, but also because this slot was just released online in North America this August.

When the Whitney Houston slot made its debut on the casino floors in 2024, it was sold as a full spectacle, as much a show as a slot. To drive home the point, IGT put the game in its towering SkyRise cabinet, a machine standing around nine feet tall and boasting a pair of 55-inch 4K screens and a floor-shaking audio system. The result is a slot that puts you front and center of a Whitney concert, with pulsing lights and the “Voice of a Generation” belting out classic hits like “I Wanna Dance with Somebody,” “So Emotional,” and “How Will I Know.”

Playing Whitney Houston in a land-based casino is all about treating your senses to light, sound, and motion. And yes, you also get the excellent game too, complete with its many features and progressive jackpot. Whitney really is a show stopper on the casino floor, attracting people from across the room to watch and play the game.

Translating that sort of immersive level of gameplay online is not an easy task. So, there’s no denying that some of the spectacle and showbiz dazzle is lost on Whitney Houston online. However, what you do get is the exact same game, and all those iconic songs remain as a one-of-a-kind soundtrack.

Your experience will probably differ online as you won’t have the casino atmosphere, the booming speakers, or the huge screens with stunning visuals. The slot does play videos of Whitney in action, but it is not a game that grabs your senses like the land-based version. You’ll find that the online version is more customizable, including the ability to adjust the volume, set autoplay spins, and enjoy the game at home or on mobile.

The differences also extend to the atmosphere. The land-based version thrives on social energy, with crowds walking past, friends cheering, and the flashing lights visible across the room. Online, it becomes a personal experience that is private, portable, and far more convenient. In some ways, the online version feels stripped back, missing the spectacle, but it gains flexibility. For players who don’t live near a casino, or who want a quick session without the showbiz presentation, the digital version offers a direct route to the same jackpots and features.

In the end, both versions pay tribute to Whitney Houston’s music, but they thrive on different strengths. Which you prefer will depend on your specific preferences for playing slots, but the chances are you will just love both the land-based and online versions of the Whitney Houston slot.

Spinning Like an Egyptian - The Cleopatra Slot

Z.C.: Cleopatra is one of these slots that I was familiar with from both the online space and casino floors in Vegas and beyond. This IGT game is one of the must-haves for many online casinos in North America, and it’s really easy to find in land-based casinos as well. So it was one of my obvious choices to try.

In July 2021, IGT unveiled a new game from its creative vault, and it was a sequel to one of its classic legacy games. Cleopatra II had a lot to live up to when it landed on the casino floors of Las Vegas and beyond. The original Cleopatra is a queen of the casino floor and also has a weighty legacy online, so Cleopatra II needs to match that decades-long presence and balance retaining the DNA of the original while creating a modern slot experience.

Playing on a casino floor in Las Vegas, Cleopatra really gets its right by offering a more classic gameplay experience. It does not come with the dominance of IGT cabinets like SkyRise and PeakSlant. The game plays on a more standard single-screen slot machine, so there are no towering displays that stand like beacons in the slot arena. If you love spectacle in a land-based casino, this is probably not the game for you. But it does deliver immersion and intimacy for a more traditional way to have sessions, spinning the reels.

And, even on a smaller cabinet, Cleopatra II is theatrical and has splendid visuals. Whether it’s the hieroglyph-etched stone columns of the reels or the royal figures and gilded icons of the symbols, the game's regal design and ambient lights look great on the casino floor. A soundtrack of enchanting tones fills the game space around the cabinet.

Land-based machines emphasize this progression in bonuses and wins through flashing lights and sound crescendos, making each increment or payout feel climactic. Some of this flair and immersion remains when playing Cleopatra II online. However, the game becomes more flexible and versatile, too. It keeps the same core mechanics, such as 20 paylines, Cleopatra wilds with double pays, and progressive multipliers in free spins.

Like all IGT classics, the developers do a great job at converting what is an eye-catching spectacle on the casino floor into a more personal online experience. You get the ability to control volume to suit your space, while also having access to autoplay to make online sessions go more smoothly. Of course, you also get the clear RTP information too, with the game sitting between 95.13% and 95.88% depending on the casino operator.

The biggest difference lies not in features but in ambience and accessibility. On a casino floor, Cleopatra II feels like it attracts the slot community with the flashing of lights, the chorus of nearby machines, and the physical press of a button, creating a tangible atmosphere. Online, the game transforms into a private slot where there’s no crowd. It’s only you, your screen, and the thrill of the game.

Jackpots from the Orient Express - Prosperity Link Family Slots

Prosperity Link Family Slots - Ziv Chen for Casino.ComProsperity Link Family Slots - Ziv Chen for Casino.Com

Z.C.: The arrival of the Prosperity Link slots on casino floors in 2022 brought IGT’s vision of the Far East aesthetic into the modern age. Both Wan Shi Ru Yi and Cai Yun Heng Tong showcase IGT’s PeakSlant49 cabinet, a slot machine with immersive technology, including Full HD 49-inch displays. This is an eye-catching cabinet, but it still provides an intimate feel, unlike the more dominating SkyRise machines. Both Prosperity Link games come alive on casino floors, with the sparkling gold pots and swirling orbs popping from the screens.

By 2024, the Prosperity Link slots came to the online space, appearing on top casino sites in North America and beyond. IGT smartly kept the core of the gameplay experience, so players still get 5x3 reels, 243 ways to win, Money Balls, Prosperity Pots, and the progressive jackpots. Of course, the online versions lose the bright lights and captivating magnetism of the land-based machines, but they do lean into the intimacy of these games with a more compact and personal setting.

For both Wan Shi Ru Yi and Cai Yun Heng Tong, the online version adapted the land-based mechanics for familiarity and convenience, packaging rich visuals and gameplay for players logging in from their devices.

The biggest difference between the land-based and online formats is the atmosphere. Playing the physical game feels more immersive, with the buzz of the lights and animations attracting crowds of people and adding a sense of excitement. Switching online feels more understated, but it does make it easy to have focused and relaxed sessions. You’ll also get customization benefits online, including more adjustable bets, autoplay, and the ability to control the volume.

But there is a real continuity that connects both versions, and that’s the outstanding gameplay that IGT PlayDigital has carried over from the land-based game. The developer has an excellent track record in successfully porting its brick-and-mortar cabinets into the online realm, and Prosperity Links is another home run.

Ultimately, the double life of Prosperity Link offers two flavors of the same excitement. In casinos, it’s a dramatic, theatrical spectacle with ominous jackpots looming on giant screens alongside loud lighting and crowds. Online, it’s that very same slot but reduced into a personal hub with rich visuals, rapid bonuses, and progressive thrills delivered in your living room. The mechanics and potential are consistent, but it’s the ambiance and accessibility that change.

Howling at the Reels - Wolf Run Eclipse

Wolf Run Eclipse - Ziv Chen for Casino.ComWolf Run Eclipse - Ziv Chen for Casino.Com

Z.C.: Since leaving the IGT creative team in early 2024, Wolf Run Eclipse has been captivating players in land-based casinos on the Las Vegas Strip and beyond. As the latest in the enduring and iconic Wolf Run series, this newer version embraces modern features while retaining the aesthetic of the franchise. It is a slot that combines nostalgia and reverence with a reimagining that builds on the mystique with unique features.

And on the casino floor in Vegas, Wolf Run Eclipse really stands out, running on IGT’s attractive PeakSlant49 cabinet. This is a soaring slot machine that features a 49-inch display and a new digital player panel. The result is an immersive experience that will draw you across the casino floor as the screen outshines most around it. You’ll also instantly see the midnight blues and black colors of the Wolf Run theme, a cold and mystical design that is one of the most unmissable.

The PeakSlant also has a world-class sound system, so you will be covered in a symphony of ambient forest sounds, totemic visuals, and howls echoing through dimly lit gaming halls. Like many of IGT’s most successful slot cabinets, Wolf Run Eclipse is a sensory explosion. You are not just spinning reels, you are living the game with rich animations, dazzling lights, and booming music featuring crescendos and subtle tones.

Switching to Wolf Run Eclipse online, and many of the elements remain intact. It remains a very atmospheric game with its twilight backdrops and nature-fused visuals adding real drama. Gameplay is the same, too, so you get the 5x4 reels and 40 fixed paylines, as well as features like the Wheel Bonus and jackpot potential. Animations are still part of the game, but they are more subtle than the land-based version.

The roar of the PeakSlant cabinet becomes a clearer calm when playing on desktop or mobile, and you can also control the volume or mute the game entirely online. On this digital stage, mechanics stay true, with the RTP hovering around 96.4–96.46% and medium volatility offering decent balance. The game becomes a more intimate spinner online, removing the crowds and sensory overload for a more rhythmic slot where the wolf’s howl becomes an inviting call.

Whether you play Wolf Run Eclipse land-based or digital, the game honors its roots through its artful design and thrilling bonus mechanics. The difference lies in the delivery, with one being more communal and theatrical, and the other distilling that into a portable, personal experience, that is accessible wherever you play.

Cashing in on Retro Riches - Top Dollar Plus

Top Dollar Plus - Ziv Chen for Casino.ComTop Dollar Plus - Ziv Chen for Casino.Com

Z.C.:  IGT’s reintroduction of the Double Top Dollar slot on casino floors brought one of the classic slots back to land-based players. Offering the minimalist game with a retro vibe to the masses in Las Vegas and beyond. For the 2025 re-release, the developer also put the game into its modern DiamondRS cabinet, which offers a 32” Square Ultra High Definition LCD top box for animations, a 23” Full High Definition main multi-touch screen, and a 10.1” LCD player panel.

It is not as towering as the IGT’s SkyRise cabinets or as immersive as the PeakSlant machines, but the DiamondRS is an intimate cab that delivers a slick design and 3 mechanical reels that are perfect for games like Double Top Dollar. A stripped-back slot with no-frills gameplay and a smooth but simple aesthetic, this game really comes alive in the DiamondRS cabinet.

And IGT has done a great job of replicating the mechanics, visuals, gameplay, and soundtrack of the original game. You’ll get the old-school animations and audio that made Double Top Dollar iconic the first time around. At its core, the gameplay remains simple. You need to land the bright red Double Top Dollar symbol on the center reel to trigger a “Take-or-Refuse” bonus, unveiling up to four cash offers.
It is the sort of game that really takes on life in a land-based setting. The click of buttons, the mechanical whirl of the wheels, it all adds to the realism alongside the ambience of the casino floor. In contrast, the online version mostly removes any of that authentic realism and replaces it for fast-paced action for players who want as many spins as possible during a session.

IGT PlayDigital keeps the same mechanics for Double Top Dollar online, so you’ll still play on the 3x3 grids with 9 fixed paylines. The RTP is 96.24% online, information you probably won’t get from your brick-and-mortar casino. With a minimum bet of 0.10, the online version is accessible for all budgets, making it a solid choice for beginners and casual players. In comparison, the land-based version feels more like a slot you play to try and win bigger payouts.

The tactile energy of the casino gives way to convenience thanks to autoplay functions, instant access on any device, and no distractions. The graphics remain crisp, though without some of the animations from the cabinet.

Despite the change in setting, the heart of Double Top Dollar remains. Whether you’re enjoying the mechanical sounds of a physical cabinet or tapping through offers on your screen, the experience still hangs on making choices about whether to take a payout or take the risk to play on for bigger wins.
