An individual died as a result of an officer-involved shooting near a casino in Thackerville, Oklahoma.

The unidentified victim was pronounced dead following a shooting near WinStar Casino on Thursday afternoon. Officers responded to a call and eventually engaged the individual, with few details revealing what escalated the situation.

No officials were injured during the incident.

Deadly shooting near Oklahoma casino

According to the Chickasaw Lighthorse Police, police in Burleson, Texas, about 90 miles directly south, requested a welfare check on a potentially suicidal person who may have been within close proximity to the casino.

Officers traveled to the location and made contact with the individual, whose name and description has not been released.

After encountering the person, the officer-involved shooting transpired. It is unclear what happened that led to officials using deadly force.

Chickasaw Lighthorse Chief of Police Charles Palmer issued a statement on Thursday, following the events.

“Chickasaw Lighthorse officers responded to WinStar Casino and made contact with the individual outside. During that encounter, an officer-involved shooting occurred,” he said. “At this time, the Chickasaw Lighthorse Police Department and the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation (OSBI) are working to gather all relevant facts to ensure an accurate understanding of the situation.”

The investigation is ongoing

The Chickasaw Lighthorse Police confirmed to KXII 12 that all of the officers involved left the scene without any injuries.

Chief Palmer also said that his team was taking care of any possible threats, ensuring that the public would be free to travel through the area without the risk of any related violence.

“The Chickasaw Lighthorse Police Department remains committed to maintaining a safe and secure environment for all citizens, employees, and visitors,” Palmer said in a statement. “Officers have implemented appropriate measures to ensure continued safety, and there is no ongoing threat to the public.”

An investigation by the local police and the OSBI is still ongoing.
