New Markets Come at a Good Time for Kalshi
While Kalshi has experienced massive volume over the first two weeks of the NFL season, its pricing was not as competitive as promised. While it is trending in the right direction, the operator is still lagging behind the country’s leading sportsbooks.
With these new prop bet markets, Kalshi will gain a crucial edge to help negate the pricing complaints. That’s due to the sports betting industry cracking down on player prop betting, making them harder to find. With bettors in all 50 states now having access, those bettors will have more incentive to make the switch.
Will These Set Responsible Gaming Progress Back?
The reason states have begun to oppose player prop betting is the rise in betting scandals. Athletes can more directly influence prop bets without raising suspicion from officials, coaches, and fans. NCAA President Charlie Baker, who is currently dealing with several scandals involving men’s basketball players, has continued to lead a campaign to end the controversial bet type.
With warnings over the dangers of player props growing, several states are considering or have already passed bans on them. This was seen as a massive win for responsible gaming, as well as the integrity of US sports. Unfortunately, Kalshi’s new markets are about to undo that progress, and the consequences could be disastrous.
Why is Kalshi Making More Enemies?
We already know that attorneys general from over 30 states have joined to express their opposition to sports prediction markets. However, the remaining states have not weighed in, and the White House seems determined to protect the industry.
That support has led Kalshi to argue that they are not offering sports betting while in court, while simultaneously advertising its platform as a way to bet on sports legally. The operator has been making a mockery of US law, and watching their userbase grow as it does.
We can understand Kalshi’s fight to defend itself, but the launch of these new markets is a considerable risk. They are going to knowingly violate state laws while ignoring problem gambling dangers, making more enemies in the process. If we see problem gambling stats spike as a result, it could spell disaster for the entire prediction market industry.
