The very first roulette wheel was invented in 1655 by Blaise Pascal, a French physicist and mathematician who sought to create a perpetual motion machine. 200 years later, after spreading across Europe and gaining a growing following, a single 0 was added to the wheel, thus increasing the house edge and making it a hit with casinos and players alike.

This was the birth of European Roulette, a game that eventually spread to all corners of the world. It has assumed several forms over the years and the wheel looks decidedly different from the one created by Pascal, but the basic idea remains the same, and it’s an idea that has helped to create the world’s best-loved casino game.

Casino.com IE is home to some of the world’s best European Roulette creations, games that you can play on your mobile device and your desktop, going up against Live Dealers and the AI.

To start playing European Roulette at Casino.com IE, just sign up for an account, make a deposit, and place your bets. To learn more about this wheel game, including rules, strategy, tips, and more, keep reading!

RULES: HOW TO PLAY EUROPEAN ROULETTE?

The basic rules of European Roulette are quite simple, and that’s why the game has endured for so long.

Roulette consists of a wheel and a table, both of which display a series of alternating black and white numbers from 1 to 36, along with a green 0. To bet, you need to place your chips on the board in relation to what you think the winning number will be.

Once all bets have been placed, the wheel is spun, the ball is dropped inside, and wherever it stops, that becomes the winning number.

You can bet on single numbers, multiple numbers, and groups, and all of these are grouped into categories known as Inside Bets and Outside Bets.

Some of these are simple. For instance, to bet on a single number you just need to stack your chips on the corresponding square. There are also squares relating to Odd/Even, Black/Red, Column Bets, and more.

However, some of the rarer bets are a little more complicated and not as well known. For instance, if you want to bet that the ball will land on one or two numbers, you just stack your chips on the vertical or horizontal line between those numbers.

When you discount betting strategies and experience, the only thing that separates a novice player from a veteran is knowing how to make all bets.

Take a look at the “Special European Roulette Features” section below to learn how to place many different bets.

ODDS AND PAYOUTS

The odds show you how likely a particular bet is to pay out while the payouts tell you how much you will get. There is always a discrepancy between the two, and this accounts for the house edge.

For instance, the Even/Odd and Black/Red bets offer an even payout of 1 to 1. This means that if you bet €10 and win, you’ll get a profit of €10 for a return of €20.

Based on that, you might expect the odds to be 50%, much like the toss of a coin. But if that was the case, the casino would be gambling just as much as the player, and that’s not how these games work.

As a result, the odds drop to 48.64%, with the remaining amount accounting for the house edge. This discrepancy is provided by the green 0 square, because it is neither odd nor even (in Roulette terms, at least) nor is it red or black.

EUROPEAN ROULETTE RTP

European Roulette has a Return to Player (RTP) average of 97.3%. This is basically the opposite of the house edge, which is fixed at 2.7%. The difference is that the RTP shows you your odds and the house edge displays the casino’s odds.

The easiest way to understand this is to imagine that for every €100 wagered, you can expect an average return of €97.3.

Of course, it’s a little more complicated than that. Some players will win much more, others will win much less, this is just the average and it’s calculated through millions of plays across all types of bets.

SPECIAL EUROPEAN ROULETTE FEATURES

Unless you have some prior knowledge of European Roulette, you probably think that bets are limited to single numbers and larger groups. This is how most novices play the game, with the majority either betting on single numbers, which offers the largest odds and payout, or big outside bets, which has the smallest.

But when you dig beneath the surface you’ll find a plethora of other wagering possibilities. It’s all about where you place your chips, and in this section, we’ll show you how to do just that, covering both Inside Bets and Outside Bets.

Inside Bets

The “Inside” section of the betting board spans all of the single number squares and the many lines that intersect.

Straight2.70%35/1On a single number square.
Split5.41%17/1On the line between two numbers.
Street8.11%11/1At the corner point where four numbers meet.
Corner10.81%8/1On a single number square.
Line16.2%5/1On a line that spans two rows of numbers (six in total).

Outside Bets

The “Outside” section of a Roulette betting board is reserved for larger groups of numbers and is often favoured by inexperienced players.

Dozen32.4%2/1One of the three squares that segment the numbers into three blocks. Marked “1st 12”, “2nd 12”, and “3rd 12”.
Colour48.64%1/1On either the Black or Red box.

High or Low48.64%1/1OOn the square marked “1 to 18” or the one marked “19 to 36”.

TIPS AND STRATEGIES

Games of chance like European Roulette cannot be beaten with skill and strategy alone, but that doesn’t stop people from trying.

Some so-called “strategies” are based on complete fallacies and are best avoided. This includes the strategies that essentially revolve around the gambler’s fallacy.

Simply put, it states that if Red appears five times in a row, Black is more likely to appear during the next game. But that’s simply not true and future outcomes are not affected by what happened during previous games.

Some methods and strategies are a little more reliable and are built on a sensible foundation, including:

1.Martingale Strategy

The Martingale Strategy is one of the most popular and effective. The idea is that you double your stake every time you lose and return to a baseline when you win. This way, even if you hit a losing streak, the odds are high that you’ll win eventually and when you do, you’ll get your money back.

As an example, take a look at the following:

  • Wager = $10 (Win); Profit/Loss = $10
  • Wager = $10 (Loss); Profit/Loss = $0
  • Wager = $20 (Loss); Profit/Loss = ($20)
  • Wager = $40 (Loss); Profit/Loss = ($60)
  • Wager = $80 (Loss); Profit/Loss = ($140)
  • Wager = $160 (Win); Profit/Loss = $20
  • Wager = $10 (Win); Profit/Loss = $30

It’s a risky strategy and one that will hit a brick wall if you encounter a table limit.

There are a few other European Roulette strategies that follow a similar pattern, including ones that flip the idea completely, requiring you to double your stake when you win and not when you lose.

2.Create a Bankroll

Whatever strategy you choose and however you decide to play, it’s important to establish a bankroll. This is your budget for gambling and it’s important to never exceed it.

Always choose a budget that you can afford to lose and never take away from important expenses like bills and rent.

3.Set Deposit and Wagering Limits

To make extra sure of your bankroll, you can set deposit and wagering limits.

Casino.com IE members can limit themselves to specific sums every month and once these limits have been set, they cannot be exceeded.

If you find that you are gambling and losing more than you can afford, you can request a timeout or a complete self-exclusion, which will block your account for a predetermined period of time.

At Casino.com IE, European Roulette is available in two forms: Virtual and Live Dealer. With the former, you play against the AI and can set your own pace. With the latter, you play alongside others and with a real dealer.

The house edge is just 2.70%, which is notably less than the 5.26% offered by games of American Roulette.

Yes. In virtual games, every spin is determined by a Random Number Generator. In Live Dealer games, the randomness doesn’t need to be simulated as premium Roulette equipment is used.

Slots and card games are big business in Ireland but countless players also enjoy an occasional game of European Roulette every now and then. It’s one of the most common variants of Roulette in Ireland.

French Roulette features the same wheel and betting options as European Roulette. The only difference is that French Roulette features a rule known as “en prison”, which helps to reduce the house edge somewhat.

At Casino.com IE, you can play on your tablet, phablet, smartphone, desktop, and laptop—everyone can join in and there is no shortage of games to play.

The odds are generally very favourable, especially when compared to American Roulette. European Roulette also gives players the option to place multiple different bets, from Black/Red and Odd/Even, where the payout is 1:1, to single number bets, when it jumps to 35:1.

It’s this variety, along with the low house edge, that makes European Roulette such a popular choice with players from Ireland.

French Roulette is often considered to be the classic variant, but European Roulette adopts many of the same rules and stylings.

Casino.com IE is home to a broad range of top real money European Roulette titles, including games that you can play with live dealers.
