It’s an overused cliché but: this really is the sort of hotel where you would expect to see James Bond enjoy a game of Baccarat at the tables. That’s because it is - exactly - the hotel where James Bond outplayed LeChiffre in the 2006 reboot of Casino Royale.
Director Martin Campbell thought the 300-year old Czech hotel was perfect for the part. He was right. The hotel guest list includes the likes of Beethoven, Goethe, Wagner, John Travolta, Oliver Stone, Judi Dench, Robert De Niro, and too many more to mention. It’s a five star destination with an A-list clientele.
The hotel casino is small but elegantly formed. It’s all about charisma and elegance. The casino is happy to let rookie players enjoy a ‘show game’ where they can get to grips with the ins and outs of the casino’s more complicated games.
The Grand Hotel Pupp has more than 40 chefs working in its restaurants and bars. For fine dining, it has to be the award-winning Grandrestaurant Pupp. The elegant café Pupp is where Johann Wolfgang Goethe enjoyed a bowl of chocolate soup. If you want something a little livelier, head to the Becher’s Bar near to the casino.
If you (literally) want to walk in the footsteps of James Bond – this is where you can do it. Be warned: the Grand Hotel Pupp is not for the weak of wallet. The cheapest double room – in low season – still costs nearly €200 a night.
However, for one night, in a black tuxedo, drinking a dry martini, shaken not stirred, Aston Martin parked outside, as the beautiful people jostle at the Baccarat table… Sometimes, life’s too short to not be James Bond.
