In 2016, the Casino du Lac-Leamy will be 20 years old. Inaugurated in March 1996, the casino was the first in Quebec to be built from the ground up, under a government-run initiative to raise funds and keep gambling revenue in the country.
It works. Not only does the Gatineau-based venue employ more than 1,500 people and generate $35 million every year, it also offers more than three million annual visitors a first-class gaming experience.
The casino has more than 70,000 sq ft of gaming space and features all the classic tables games, as well as nearly 2,000 slots. The full suite of games is in play – from craps to sic bo to Spanish 21, pai gow, and let it ride.
There is also a keno lounge, a sports bar, and a poker room that hosts regular tournaments. There is even a bad beat jackpot, in play during cash games, that pays if you lose with a full house of aces full of jacks.
The hotel is attached to the building. Between the two venues, food and drink options vary from nightclub lively at Club Alea to sit down fine dining at Le Baccara. In between, the choice ranges from café bistro to surf and turf. There’s even a cigar room for some celebration Cuban-style.
The 1,100 capacity theatre is another highlight and one of the few venues in Quebec to offer an old-school sit-down dinner show experience.
Slick, professional, and tax-free, the Casino du Lac-Leamy is the perfect example of what is possible with a professionally run – government supported – hotel and casino. If you find yourself in Ottawa and you are looking for a game, moor up on the Lake and give it a look.
The hotel and casino are accessible by car, shuttle bus, boat and helicopter. Visitors to Ottawa and Gatineau can take advantage of a free bus service – schedule available upon request. The venue is less than 28 km from Ottawa International Airport and 10 minutes from downtown Ottawa.
