The South Koreans online gaming industry has grown stronger than television and film and is slowly becoming a national obsession. Professional Korean players have loyal fans and salaries and are even known for signature moves. Students in South Korean spend an average of 23 hours a week online playing internet games.
During the last five years, the Korean government has been trying to fight the national addiction with proper education, counseling and group discussions.
The professional gaming league in South Korea had become part of mainstream culture. Competitions are televised and sponsored by huge corporations such as Samsung.
“It has become a legitimate e-sport”, said Kim Tae Hyung, an e-gaming broadcaster. We’ve had this now for 10 years, and people now are growing up with it. Korea being the originating country for e-sports, it’s very important for the government to support that.”
