History of Blackjack

Blackjack @ Casino.com

Like many card games, the exact origins of blackjack remain shrouded in mystery. The first mention of the game in literature is by Spanish author Miguel de Cervantes, who describes two of his characters cheating at a game called ventiuna. The most common ancestor of blackjack is generally agreed to be the French card game of Vingt En Un. This was popular in French casinos in the 17th century and, like blackjack, the aim was to create a score as close to 21 as possible. However, the old versions of Vingt En Un differ from modern blackjack in several areas, such as only the dealer being allowed to double, and players being required to place a bet after each round. The ideal hand in Vingt En Un, which granted the holder a special bonus, was composed of a Jack and Ace of Spades. This birthed the modern name blackjack. The term “bust” was taken from the Italian points-based card game Seven and a Half.

Following the French Revolution the game was brought to North America, where it grew and flourished in the wake of the gold rush. Gambling in general became a popular pastime in the New World, as there were no laws to prohibit it. Alongside poker, blackjack became one of the primary card games of choice among American gamblers. Many players began to develop strategies, although in these times cheating was rampant, and professional gambling often went hand in hand with crime.

As such, and despite blackjack’s growing popularity, the US government banned all forms of gambling in the early 19th century. Blackjack went underground, gaining a dark glamour thanks to the restrictions placed around it. The game continued to enjoy widespread appeal throughout the 20’s, and eventually found a home in Nevada after gambling was legalised there in 1931. Then as now, blackjack remains one of Las Vegas’ most popular and iconic games.

Online Blackjack: A Great Bet for a Winning Game

Blackjack is, without doubt, one of the most popular and successful games in any casino. Now you can enjoy great game play and have the chance to win some exciting bonuses with Casino.com’s online game of Blackjack.

Online Blackjack

Blackjack, often simply called 21, is available in several state-of-the-art online formats. You can play Lucky Blackjack, Blackjack Surrender, Blackjack Switch, and 21 Duel Blackjack, as well various live games.

The aim of Blackjack is to reach as close to 21 as you can without going over that amount, or “busting.” In other card games you play against fellow players; for online Blackjack, you battle head-on against the dealer.

The first step is to place your bet. After placing your bet, each player is dealt two playing cards. If your cards’ combined value is closer to 21 than the dealer’s cards, then you win the total amount wagered. You win as well if you get exactly 21 or the dealer’s cards go above 21 in their combined value. However be careful, if you go over 21, then you lose your bet. This is a game involving some chance yet also requires some guts and risk taking. Should you add another card or two to your dealt hand? Or should you remain with what you were initially given?

Online blackjack, unlike other games, assigns picture cards with a value of ten points. The ace on the other hand can be counted as either a 1 or an 11, depending on which value would be more beneficial to the dealer or player.

If you want to look like a pro, it’s always great to know your blackjack terminology. A ‘hit’, is when you take a new card. When you ‘stand’, you stay with your current hand. A ‘split’ happens when you take two cards of the same value and divide them into two separate hands by putting up a second bet of the same value.

With players winning a massive $144,453,202 during the last 12 months, you will love playing online blackjack. So open your real-money Casino.com account today and win YOUR part of the next blackjack winnings!

Your Guide to Different Online Blackjack Games (part 2)

Last time we introduced you to two simple versions of online blackjack—Lucky Blackjack and Pontoon Blackjack. Today we’ll tell you all about three more blackjack variations—Blackjack Surrender and Blackjack Switch. These are all similar to classic blackjack, but you’ll also get some additional betting, some more creative rules, and hopefully more money as well!

Blackjack Switch is the first one we’ll discuss today. I happen to think this is one of the most fun blackjack versions…maybe that’s because you get to play around with your  cards and create different hands from the ones you were dealt. Here’s how it works, you’ll be dealt two face-up hands, and then if you want, you can switch the top card of one hand with the top card of the other hand, creating two new hands in place of the original ones. Sounds like you’ve got an unfair hand against the dealer, right? Well to even the playing field, the dealer gets an advantage too—if the dealer scores a 22, it doesn’t count as a bust, but as a push against your hand…that is, unless you get a blackjack, and then you win.

The last online blackjack game that we’ll describe (for now at least) is Blackjack Surrender. Here’s another variation where if you don’t like your cards you’ll get to do something about it. After receiving your cards (and before seeing the dealer’s), you’ll get the option to surrender your cards…for a price, that is. In order to opt out of the round, you’ll have to sacrifice half of your initial bet. But hey, if you’ve got a feeling the dealer will win, it’s totally worth it—losing half is better than losing it all!

Your Guide to Different Online Blackjack Games (part 1)

Did you know that there are more online blackjack games than just the classic version? In addition to the traditional game of blackjack, you can also play Lucky Blackjack, Pontoon Blackjack, Blackjack Surrender, and Blackjack Switch, among many others. The possibilities are endless!

In this guide to online blackjack, we’ll give you the lowdown on the most popular online blackjack games available on Casino.com. Browse through this two-part guide and then choose the game that suits you best!

First up is Lucky Blackjack, which is probably the easiest of the bunch. In Lucky Blackjack all you need to do is bet on which point value you think the dealer will get. Instead of getting dealt your own hand, you’ll just place your bet on one of the choices in the middle of the table—you can choose between 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, Blackjack (BJ), and Bust (that is, that the dealer will get over 21).

Think of Lucky Blackjack as a combo of a card game and a table game—it’s a fast-paced game for players of all skill levels.

Next up is Pontoon Blackjack. This version of Blackjack is known as British Blackjack since it’s the version that’s played in Great Britain, as compared to classic blackjack which is what’s generally played in the U.S. and in other countries around the world. There are a few differences between Pontoon and regular blackjack, mainly that you don’t get to see either of the dealer’s cards when you play your hand. Also a 5-card trick (a.k.a. a “Pontoon”) wins a payout of 2 to 1 instead of the traditional 1.5 to 1. Also, a Pontoon beats any hand but the “Blackjack” hand. It couldn’t be easier…or more fun!

That’s it for now, but stay tuned because in our next post we’ll introduce you to two more blackjack varieties—Blackjack Switch and Blackjack Surrender.
